The Association for Effective Altruism Czechia is looking for a Director to join the core organizational team. The application form is here.

Effective Altruism Czechia

We encourage individuals to consider the degree of positive impact their life decisions—such as the focus of their studies, work, or volunteer activities—can have on the world. We provide a variety of support and guidance. We offer tools and analyses to help those interested in managing their resources in a way that maximizes their positive impact. We seek to popularize research questions and fields that require more attention and expertise.

Why is our mission important

Many people have versatile talents and want to make a positive impact. To find their fit, they need not only to know themselves well but also to develop a solid understanding of significant global issues. At the association, we strive to create an environment where people motivate each other to study current challenges and test their abilities.

We believe that without such a space and a connection to a motivated community—both locally and internationally—many people would remain on their original, more arbitrary paths or fail to consider impactful opportunities.

We see ourselves as multipliers of others‘ positive impact, guides for individuals seeking fulfilling impact-driven work, and supporters of organizations striving for positive change. Locally, we believe that many critical issues remain constrained more by a lack of people working on them than by a lack of funding (as fundraising tends to be handled more by western organizations). To address this, we stay informed about new technologies and research methods to guide others effectively in forming relevance maps.

We are seeking an Executive (Co-)Director to join our core organizational team.

What makes work at EA Czechia unique?

The management of the association has similarities with corporate or non-profit management:

  • Goal Setting: The association has no prescribed agenda; there are many ways to support people in making a positive impact. The Director must determine what is realistic and stick to the chosen direction.
  • Theory of Change: Developing a clear theory for achieving desired outcomes is essential.
  • Evaluation: Establishing methods to measure progress and impact is critical.

It also shares features with community management:

  • Motivation: Working with individuals’ motivations is key.
  • Personal Fit: Assessing the suitability of specific roles for individuals.
  • Task Delegation: Assigning appropriately sized tasks, especially as volunteers often have limited availability.
  • Problem-Solving: Addressing challenges effectively, often with the help of ombudsmen.

We emphasize well-reasoned decision-making, counterfactual thinking, and rigorous verification of results within available resources.

Core responsibilities & practical information

The Director serves as the final authority responsible for the association’s overall operations. They act as the central coordinating link between the Czech EA community, the global movement, and the board, which helps determine the organization’s long-term direction (more here: statutes, internal regulations). Key responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing goals, strategy implementation, development, and growth
  • Coordinating activities of effective altruists within the Czech Republic and internationally
  • Managing public relations and the association’s external image
  • Drafting cooperation agreements with individuals and organizations
  • Designing, coordinating, and executing educational, research, and publication projects
  • Responding to new opportunities in the EA space and facilitating the sharing of trends within the global movement
  • Advising donors, foundations, and nonprofit organizations on effective giving (optional)
  • Securing funding from Czech or international donors
  • Writing or assisting with grant applications
  • Overseeing internal organization, including the formalization of responsibilities and smooth transitions during team changes

Team collaboration:

You will work alongside:

  • Vojtěch Brynych (COO): Manages administrative tasks, event planning, and biosafety initiatives.
  • Hana Kalivodová (Co-Director): Provides expertise in philosophy, strategy, and project management.

This two-director model, proven effective in other countries, allows for complementary skills and shared responsibilities. The outgoing Outreach Director, Jakub Sechter, managed the marketing team, so filling communication and management gaps will be a priority.

We will especially need to complement the communication and management competencies due to leave of Jakub Sechter, our current Outreach Director who managed the marketing team.
